Welcome to the wonderful world of cake smash and splash photography! If you’re a parent searching for the perfect way to celebrate your little one’s first birthday, you’re in for a treat—literally! These sessions in my Cheam based studio are not only a fantastic way to capture memories, but they’re also packed with fun, laughter, and a bit of mess. Read on to find out more.

Why Cake Smash?
Cake smash sessions are a delightful twist on traditional portrait photography. Unlike a newborn session where we take our time to capture those sleepy, precious moments, with one-year-olds, we have to work at lightning speed! They’re curious, mobile, and ready to explore (and eat) whatever they can get their hands on. And trust me, they can move fast when cake is involved!
Tips for Parents
Get Them Ready with a Cupcake: Before our big day, I always recommend letting your little one play with a cupcake at home. Let them experience the feel of the icing and the texture of the cake. It helps them understand what’s about to happen and makes them more comfortable when it’s showtime. Plus, who doesn’t love a pre-party treat?
Bring a Favorite Outfit: While I provide cute outfits for the cake smash, I encourage you to bring along something special too. Whether it’s a fun party hat or an outfit that has sentimental value, it’ll make for even more memorable photos. We will use this outfit during the portrait session and it won't get messy from the cake, I promise :) If you would prefer to only use the cake smash outfit that is absolutely fine too.
Patience is Key: One year olds have short attention spans—think of it as a rollercoaster ride! We’ll start with some sweet portraits before the cake comes out, so be prepared for giggles and maybe a few wiggles! Sometimes little ones take a little while to warm up in a new enviromnent. I always do my best to make your little one as comfortable as possible, I take time to get them used to the flash and the set.
Prepare to Get Messy, Silly and Wet: One year olds move fast, they often want to explore and you might spend a fair part of the session returning them onto the set or giving them cuddles. They love nothing more than giving you a great big cuddle just after they have been digging in the cake :) Be prepared to be covered in icing. Be prepared to be silly right behind me (to ensure they are looking at the camera). I will make all sorts of silly noises, play peek-a-boo, use my squeaky puppet, but sometimes we do need help from mummy and daddy to make little one laugh, after all you know what tickles them the best! Word of warning...I will be singing to them too and I'll admit, it is not great, there is a reason you've not seen me on Britain's Got Talent yet :D
You and and will also most likely get wet. So many little ones enjoy the bath time even more than smashing the cake and we all get splashed :) I think it is great fun and will encourage your little one to go for it :D

The Session
Here’s how a typical cake smash and splash session goes down:
Portrait Time: We’ll kick things off with a fun portrait session. I’ll capture your little one’s personality as they smile, crawl, and sit on one of my super cute little chairs. This part is all about letting them be themselves—get ready for some adorable expressions! It also gives them time to warm up to having photos taken.
Celebrate your little one's birthday in style! The Messy Part: Once we’ve got some lovely portraits, it’s time for the cake! We’ll change your little one into their cake smash outfit ready for their cake. I have outfits available to choose from for both girls and boys and I send you these to select your favourite from once your session is booked in. I provide the cake, complete with a wooden spoon for those who prefer to dig in without getting their hands messy. Just wait until you see the sheer joy on their face as they dive into frosting and cake! Will your little one be a delicate cake eater or will they face plant the cake and stick their little foot into the icing? :)
What kind of a cake-smasher will your little one be? Splash Time: After the cake extravaganza, we move on to the splash part of the session. Imagine a small roll-top bath filled with bubbles, a little rubber duck floating around, and your little one having the time of their life splashing and giggling. It’s a joyful (and slightly soggy) end to our session! Be prepared to get soaked, little ones love to splash about.
Capturing the Moments:
The beauty of cake smash and splash photography is that it’s all about those cute, fun moments and expressions. It is a big milestone and it should be celebrated and captured in beautiful images that you can cherish forever. And if you’re worried about the mess—trust me, I will do all the clean up afterwards so just bring wet wipes for you and baby and come in clothes that you don't mind getting dirty or wet :)
